Why Teach Pukerangiora Pā?
Pukerangiora Pā is a significant historical site in Taranaki.
It offers a powerful connection to teach students about a range of topics relating to local history, including Pre-European Māori history, the Musket Wars, and the Taranaki Wars. This site has multilayered significance, with visual remnants of its past still present on the landscape today.
Pukerangiora is a versatile location that can be integrated into the teaching of numerous subjects, including science, geography, art, social studies, and history.
These kits have been developed to help teachers plan and deliver meaningful visits to Pukerangiora Pā Historic Reserve. The kits cover two key topics.
Pukerangiora Pā
Focused on the original pā site and its occupation from the 1700s to the 1830s. Includes the events of the Musket Wars.
Te Ārei
Centred on the Māori fortification Te Ārei, the First Taranaki War, and its wider impacts.
